St Thomas Parish was formed in 1696 shortly after Bath County was established. For many decades services were held in local homes with lay readers. In October, 1734 church wardens wrote "We are building our own...small church, but we fear our abilities will be far short of completing and adoring the same as becomes the temple of God ".
