Marshdog Folk Art was officially launched in January 2014, with the purchase of a band saw, an interest in learning more about the architecture, history, and culture of the South, a hope that there might be some untapped creativity lurking, and most importantly to have fun. It builds on a long-standing passion for admiring and collecting folk art, particularly decoys. As with most things in life, it is very much a continual learning process and a work in progress. I exhibit my work at artisans shows on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, the John C Campbell Fall Festival, and select works are available at American Folk Art and Framing in Asheville www.amerifolk.com/artists/jack-klippel/ . Marshdog Folk Art has a Facebook page which you might take a look and 'like' to keep better informed about what is going on with us.

Waterfowl, Birds, Fish, Churches & Bird Homes |
Mounted carvings of waterfowl, song birds, crows, owls, fish and other creatures reflect the richness of wildlife that inhabit the mountains and coast of North Carolina. Houses of worship are at the very core of Southern culture and their history is very much intertwined with the history of communities and the people who live there. Throughout the 19th century, an amazing number of spectacular churches were built throughout the South. Many of these remain active to the present day whereas others are in disrepair or sadly lost to history. The small mounted churches and historic homes and larger bird homes are intended as reminders of the importance of history and to be enjoyed as works of art. They may be displayed on bookshelves, table or counter tops, mantles, or on top of cabinets or other tall pieces of furniture. Bird homes can be mounted on poles and with any luck may even attract birds seeking to nest.

Marshdog |
You might be curious about Marshdog which signifies two important things in our lives. The ebb and flow of the tide on Bald Head Creek, the changing colors of the marsh grass with the seasons, the amazing bird life in the marsh, the occasional dolphin that finds its way up the creek, the spectacular sunrises over the marsh, and the reflections of a full moon on the creek are things we cherish and think about most every day. And our Portuguese Water Dogs - Reilly, Brady, Cooper, Toby and Opie - have been the center of our lives seemingly forever and have given us energy, love, and enormous amount of joy and laughter. So Marshdog pretty much sums up a big part of our life.
